Head and Neck Cancer
Head and neck cancer is a broad term. It refers to cancers arising in the head or neck region including those in the mouth, sinuses, salivary glands, lips, throat, larynx (voice box) and lymph nodes in the neck. Tobacco use, including smokeless tobacco, is linked to eighty percent of head and neck cancers. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is also associated with many head and neck cancers.
If head and neck cancer is detected early, it’s often curable. It’s important to be aware of the symptoms to aid in early detection.
Symptoms of several head and neck cancer sites include a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, a change or hoarseness in the voice, unusual bleeding or pain in the head and neck region. These are only a few of the more common symptoms, and many of these symptoms may be present with less serious conditions too. That’s why it’s important to consult a health care provider if you have any concerns.
Diagnosis of head and neck cancer may vary depending on the symptoms, but a biopsy, or the removal of tissue, is often used. Tri-County Oral-Facial Surgeons, P.C., sends the biopsies to Mount Nittany Medical Center to be reviewed by a local pathologist to help establish the stage, or extent to which the cancer is present.
