Reconstruction

At our practice, our Fellowship trained and Board Certified surgeons offer a wide range of reconstructive procedures. Tri-County oral surgeons perform reconstructive surgery necessary to correct the loss of soft tissue or the replacement of bone to the mouth, jaws, and facial tissues. Reconstructive surgery may be required after the removal of benign or malignant tumors, facial trauma, birth defects, infections, or complications related to radiation therapy. Our focus is on patient functionality, as well as restorative and aesthetic considerations.

When the tissue loss is minimal, a suture repair is often suitable. If the area is larger with more complex tissues affected, a surgical technique called a flap is used. Although there are many types of reconstructive flap repairs, they can be categorized as local, regional, and free.

Local flaps are used when the area requiring reconstruction is nearby. Small amounts of similar tissue are rotated to an adjacent area to cover the defect. If larger areas require reconstruction, a regional flap is used. These flaps require tissue, which may include both skin and muscle, to be moved. Free flaps are used to reconstruct areas of the body that are more distant from each other. Tissue is detached and transplanted to the reconstructive site. An example of a free flap is using tissue from the forearm to reconstruct the tongue.

Reconstruction may also involve the bony structure of the face. Bone grafts and bone containing flaps are also effective methods of reconstruction. Bone grafting takes particles of bone and bone marrow and places it in the reconstructive site. Bone containing flaps are useful in reconstruction of the jaw and can be done at the same time a tumor is removed.
